Khereshwar Temple in Aligarh

Khereshwar - known to be one of the revered shrines of Lord Shiva - is popularly referred to as the “invisible shivalinga”, owing to the small size of the Shivalinga.


The Khereshwar Temple falls on the Khair Bypass road which serves as a passage between state highway 22 A and National Highway 91.

This ancient temple is situated on the basins of River Ganga in the small village of Tajpur Rasulpur, 5 kilometers distant from Aligarh.

A Sign of Remembrance

The Khereshwar Temple was constructed by the Raja Sati Prasad in remembrance of his consort, the Queen.

The Shivlingam

This ancient shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva who is present in the form of the Shivlingam. Apart from the Shivlingam, the shrine also houses the idols of other Hindu deities, which are made out of brass.

The Khereshwar Temple presents the beautiful architecture accompanied with the carvings in the ceiling having metallic mural finish.

The Khereshwar Temple is surrounded by the beautiful fields and a holy pond ‘Gandhawa’, which stand in proximity to the shrine.

The night visit of Ashwatthama

It is believed that Ashwatthama, the son of Drona from the Mahabharata, as cursed by the Lord Krishna, visits the Khereshwar temple every night and offers Ganga jal to the Shivalinga.

Keeping in mind the weather of Aligarh, the best time to visit the Khereshwar temple is during the winter season from November to February, when the weather is cool and relaxing.
